Proxima system for the ICU and OR

Proxima is Sphere Medical’s patient dedicated analyser for use in the intensive care unit (ICU) and operating room (OR). The Proxima system has the potential to improve the care of the 12 million patients worldwide each year, who are cared for in this environment.

Proxima is a disposable multi-parameter microanalyser which is integrated into the arterial line and sited on the patient’s forearm. Proxima can measure glucose, blood gases and electrolytes and is connected to a small bedside monitor, which displays results in real time. The monitor includes a built in printer and can also output results into the hospital information system. The microanalyser remains attached to the arterial line and can perform an unlimited number of analyses over a period of up to seventy two hours. The microanalyser is operated as a closed system, with all blood returned into the patient after each measurement, which reduces infection risk and prevents blood loss.

Proxima will enable clinicians to measure arterial blood parameters in real time as often as required. This will support the ability to respond rapidly to changing conditions in their critically ill patients. The measurements made by the Proxima system have the potential to support clinical decision support systems and to change, at a fundamental level, the ability of clinicians to improve patient care.
